Rider's Guide for Fixed Routes

How to read a bus schedule:

• When reading a bus schedule, know where you want to go and when you want to get there.
• Look at the schedule. Make sure you have the correct one for your destination and starting point. Also, realize that you may have to transfer from one bus to another if there is no direct route to your destination.
• Look for the day of the week on which you want to travel.
• Look up your destination on the schedule, and look across the row to find the time you wish to arrive there.
• Find your starting point on the schedule.  Work backwards from your destination to your starting point to figure out when you need to catch the bus.
• It is a good idea to arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes early.

Text Alert System

Flag Stops:

Freedom Transit operates as a “flag stop” system.  This means that you can catch the bus along the route by raising your arm and/or waving to the driver, to signal to the driver that you’d like to board the bus. 

If you want to “flag” a Freedom Transit bus, please be sure that:

1. You are standing on the correct bus route.
2. That you are standing on the correct side of the street for the direction in which you would like to travel.
3. That you are standing in an area where the bus driver can see you.
4. That you are waiting in an area where it is safe for the bus driver to pull over and for you to board the bus.

Bus stop signs are located at various locations along our bus routes in the City of Washington. Bus stop signs are also posted along Pike Street in Houston Borough and Canonsburg Borough. If you are waiting for a bus at a bus stop sign it is also helpful if you “flag” the bus by raising your arm and/or waving to the driver to signal to the driver that you’d like to board the bus.

Transfers:

Transfers are available free of charge to change from one Freedom Transit route to another.  If you need a transfer, please ask the driver for a transfer as you exit. Transfers are only good for the date the transfer is issued, for up to four hours from the time it is issued.

Passengers can use a transfer to change from one Freedom Transit route to another, but a passenger may not use a transfer to pay for a return trip.

Passenger Rules:

• Let any departing passengers exit the bus first before you board the bus.
• Pay your cash fare at the fare box as you board the bus.  Exact cash fare is required – drivers do not carry change.
• Seats near the front of the bus are often used by persons who have difficulty walking or who have a disability. Please be courteous and make seats available in these areas for elderly passengers and passengers with disabilities.
• Smoking (including E-Cigs & Vapor), eating, and drinking, are prohibited on board vehicles.
• No use of electronic equipment is permitted on the vehicle without earphones.
• Passengers are expected to be cooperative and demonstrate appropriate behavior at all times while on the vehicle. Abusive, threatening, obscene language or actions may result in immediate suspension of service or criminal prosecution.
• No discharge of bodily fluids or open wounds.
• To ensure all passengers a timely and safe ride, passengers must limit carry-on items. Carry-on bags are limited to only as much as you can carry in one trip. No oversized items are permitted. Items may not block vehicle walkways or pose any safety issue. Packages must be removed from seating if needed for seating by boarding passengers.
• No operating or tampering with any equipment while onboard a vehicle.
• For safety reasons, please limit unnecessary conversation with operators when the vehicle is in motion.
• Do not bring food or drink containers on board the bus.
• Please fold strollers while on board the bus.
• Parents must keep their children from standing or roaming around while the bus is moving

Riders who violate the rules of conduct are subject to penalties, up to and including, suspension of service. Note: Riders who engage in physical abuse or cause physical injury to another rider or operator may be subject to immediate and permanent suspension, and possible criminal prosecution.
