What Is ADA Complementary Paratransit Service?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Complementary Paratransit Service is for individuals that, due to a mental or physical disability, cannot utilize Freedom Transit’s fixed route bus service. You must apply for Freedom Transit’s ADA Complementary Paratransit service and be determined as eligible under the guidelines of the American with Disabilities Act. Applying For ADA Complementary Paratransit Service

In compliance with the American with Disabilities Act, the following forms from Freedom Transit will be utilized to determine your eligibility for ADA Complementary Paratransit service:

Once these forms have been completed and signed by the appropriate persons, the applications are to be returned to Freedom Transit for review to:

Once Freedom Transit receives a properly completed application, an applicant will be certified within 21 days of the receipt of the application. The determination will be one of full eligibility, conditional eligibility, or denial of eligibility. If the application is approved, a passenger identification card will be issued with an applicable expiration date, temporary status, or service restrictions. If an applicant feels they have been given an incorrect determination, they have the right to appeal such decision to Freedom Transit. A copy of Freedom Transit’s Appeal process can be obtained by contacting Freedom Transit of Washington Transit Department at the contact information noted above.

Eligibility Criteria – All persons who, by reason of their disability, are unable to use accessible fixed-route bus service can make application for certification in order to utilize ADA Complementary Paratransit services.

Types & Length of Eligibility –

Reservations – Once the application has been processed and you have received your ADA Card you may feel free to schedule your trip by calling 724-223-8747 or 1-800-331-5058. You may make a reservation up to fourteen (14) days in advance of your trip but you must call at least one day in advance by 3:00 p.m. Trips reservations are made for one-way trips. If you need a to return trip, this is considered as a separate reservation. For example, if an individual travels from home to the store that is considered as one trip. The trip from the store back to home is considered as a separate trip. Return trips must be scheduled at least 30 minutes after your drop off time due to the nature of the trips.Reservations are taken by WashingtonRides’ Call Center for Freedom Transit. 

Cancelations – If you need to cancel your trip, you must do so at least one hour prior to your pick-up time. If you do not cancel your trip as stated, you may be noted as a “No-Show”. Three (3) “No-Shows” in a one year time period may result in a suspension of services for a designated time period and/or you may be surcharged the fare for the missed trip. If this occurs, the passenger will be notified of the intent in writing.

Rates – As of July 1, 2017, the rate for ADA Complementary Paratransit service is $2.55 per one-way trip. Accompanying Certified Personal Care Attendants ride free of charge.

Service Area, Days & Times – ADA Complementary Paratransit service is available to you during the same days and hours that Freedom Transit’s local fixed route bus service operates. Trips must be to and from areas within ¾ of a mile from Freedom Transit’s local fixed bus routes. If you need to schedule a trip that is not during a day, time or area covered by Freedom Transit of Washington’s local fixed bus route schedule, don’t worry – you may qualify for trips under services operated by Washington Rides. Just make sure that you are also signed up for services offered by Washington Rides. Just call 724-223-8747 to receive Washington Rides’ Eligibility Application.
